How do you step from the top of a 100-foot pole

Stepping from a 100-foot pole, that’s simple, what goes up must come down the science of gravity proves it. Depending on how you got to the top will ensure you a soft or hard landing. Hard work can never be achieved by a simple stride, but through sweat and determination. Cheating your way to the top or even stepping on people to get to the top can never be a safe or guaranteed way of occupying and maintaining your position, it will just simple point out how quickly you will fall.

It is the unnecessary measures that one takes that ensure them a steady recovery once they have to step down from even the highest peak. So then it would be wise to tread carefully so that you can ensure a speedy recovery.

We are what we do

There was a time when a man’s word was so powerful that they would swear on it, but nowadays it is worthless. We have been taught through past experience and behavior that one can never trust someone’s word. Hence we say actions speak louder than words. We as society and individuals are tired of the meaningless exchange of words all we want now is action, actions that will reflect as words, because indeed we have heard the empty promises and now we want to see.

A simple gesture of kindness and giving out your time is an action on its own. Everytime I walk home, there is a big board written, 'You have not lived until you have done something for someone who can never repay you.'

I hope people who walk or drive past this board actually take the time and read it. That qoute, basically covers the essence of life, what we should be as well as who we should be.

Fish falling frm the sky

Can fish ever fall from the sky? Sometimes that’s the question we should ask ourselves when posing a requesting to the government. I understand that the Lord created the earth and its inhabitants and made man ruler over them, just as we made the government ruler over its resources to be distributed amongst its people. Asking from government at times is likes squeezing water from a stone. We want housing, we want our basics necessities, but we are not getting much if any that is.

The onus then lies on us as individuals to start working and be creators of our own future. When working towards your personal goal fish does fall from the sky and it definitely will if it has to. So why not adapt the same approach of getting up and doing it for ourselves and thus bettering our communities.

I Had To Let You Read This- From Paul Ngobeni (A response)

Dear Minister Trevor Manuel,


I was appalled by your cowardly, unwarranted and racist attack on Jimmy Manyi. Your letter is bristling with insults, half-truths and outright misrepresentations of which you should be ashamed.

You took advantage of your position as a cabinet minister and in particular section 197 of the constitution which obligates Manyi as a member of the public service to “loyally execute the lawful policies of the government of the day”.

Manyi is disabled by this higher constitutional imperative from engaging in public mudslinging with you or responding to your dastardly and vitriolic attacks.

As a director-general in the GCIS, he is obligated to respect all cabinet members and their departments.

He can only respond to your pseudo-intellectual clap-trap at the risk of losing his job. That is why I think you are a veritable bangbroek, Comrade Manuel.

You and your cohorts who have targeted Manyi for his position in the BMF as well as his views on employment equity must be cognisant of another provision of the constitution, section 197 (3) which states that “No employee of the public service may be favoured or prejudiced only because that person supports a particular political party or cause”. In a gangster-like fashion, some of you have deliberately targeted Manyi and have relentlessly pursued an agenda of driving him out of any position where his views may be heard.

The opening paragraph of your letter betrays your ignorance of the constitution and smacks of casuistry.

You implore Manyi to let “us drop titles for the purpose of a necessary exchange. So let us forget for now that I am a cabinet minister and that you are a director-general equivalent, in the same government”.

What utter nonsense. You have deliberately exploited your position as a cabinet minister and a senior member of the ANC and have written your letter with full knowledge that it would be given widespread publicity and would have the tendency to inflict maximum reputational damage on Manyi.

You knew that the distortions and falsehoods in your letter would provoke public condemnation of Manyi without any chance of meaningful rebuttal by him. What exchange can Manyi realistically have with you in light of the constitutional duty imposed upon him?

In fact, you never genuinely expected the “necessary exchange” you cynically allude to ever to materialise. It is downright ludicrous for you to expect anyone to “forget” that you are a cabinet minister when dealing with the Manyi saga. Wasn’t Manyi’s recent appointment to his current position approved by the very cabinet of which you are a member?

You make another puzzling statement that it is “quite a mystery” that Manyi was a “director-general of the Department of Labour, as well as the president of the BMF” at the time when he made the statements attributed to him. You claim that you must assume that Manyi was “… appointed as director general of the Department of Labour, without any familiarity with the constitution of the Republic of South Africa or the legislation administered by the department”.

Once again this prompts the question: were you not part of the cabinet that approved Manyi’s appointment in his former position at the Department of Labour?

Did you shirk your responsibility to ensure that Manyi was fully conversant with the constitution and applicable legislation when his appointment came up for discussion before the cabinet? You have chosen to attack him on the basis of statements he allegedly made more than a year ago – many months before his appointment came for consideration before cabinet. Did you at any stage take your cabinet colleagues into your confidence on this matter or disclose to them the alleged racism by Manyi or his lack of familiarity with the values undergirding our constitution?

You have conveniently cast aside another fundamental constitutional principle, which is collective ministerial responsibility enshrined in section 92 of the constitution. Section 92 makes it pellucid that members of the cabinet are accountable collectively and individually to Parliament for the exercise of their powers.

Quite naturally, and in line with this precept, it means that once the cabinet has decided or made its views known on a matter, members of the cabinet have to speak with one voice and consistent with their duties to defend and execute the cabinet policies. You have tried to extricate yourself from two separate cabinet decisions regarding Manyi’s appointment and have in effect called into question the competence and wisdom of both the president and your cabinet colleagues in appointing Manyi to his positions.

I suggest that the president remove you from the cabinet for your unconstitutional actions and political grandstanding. Before that occurs, you should consider resigning as a cabinet minister because of your violation of the foregoing constitutional provisions.

Substantively, there is nothing racist in the statements attributed to Manyi. You have made your incendiary remarks and lobbed patently false accusations against Manyi and have completely failed to understand the point he was making in its proper context. I am unwilling to attribute this simply to your lack of higher academic achievement or advanced degrees. It reflects your own mean-spirited racist attack on Manyi.

You stated the following:

“In confronting our past, we must recognise that racial divisions here were a necessary precondition for capitalist industrial relations. Every element in South Africa – from the early colonisation by the Dutch, through the decimation of the indigenous Khoi and San, through the introduction of migrant labour to dig the mines, through the 1913 and 1936 Land Acts, the introduction of job reservation and the coloured labour preference policy – in fact every element of South Africa’s apartheid past was premised on the need to subjugate black South Africans, in order to exploit and so maximise both profits and control.”

Some of this history is so complicated, as Ian Goldin reminds in his book Making Race (The Politics and Economics of Coloured Identity in South Africa).

In the 19th century, the term coloured in official documents referred to all persons not classified as European. By 1904, however, the term coloured had been reconstituted to exclude Bantu-speaking people.

From 1904 until the present time the term coloured has roughly designated the same category of individuals. No single definition of coloured people exists: a succession of contradictory legislative measures and legal precedents has only added to the ambiguity surrounding the term.

In acknowledging our past, especially here in the Western Cape, we must then understand how this bureaucratic nonsense has been imbibed – the legacy of group areas remains, and the coloured labour preference, is still sought after by some.

There is nothing racist in Manyi recognising as you did that the legacy of apartheid has bedeviled many of the post-apartheid efforts to create a just and egalitarian society with equal opportunities for all our citizens. Manyi is alleged to have said: “I think it is very important for coloured people in this country to understand that South Africa belongs to them in totality, not just the Western Cape… So this over-concentration of coloureds in the Western Cape is not working for them.”

How can any right-thinking, rational and unbiased observer think that an affirmation that South Africa belongs to the coloureds in totality, not just the Western Cape, is a racist statement? Is the alleged over-concentration not a result of the very apartheid legacy you claim “has been imbibed” and the consequence of the same “coloured labour preference” you claim is still being “sought after by some”?

If so, what would be wrong with someone advocating a change in this mindset where people have “imbibed” the poisonous apartheid ideology.

You blithely ignored your own previous speeches and acknowledgement of this socio-economic reality in a mean-spirited and gadarene rush to condemn Manyi.

The fact of the matter is that the highly educated Manyi was expounding a very simple labour economics concept which was apparently too complicated for you to comprehend.

He would have been remiss in failing to recognise that what you call “bureaucratic nonsense” has distorted our labour market in a way that has major implications for all our citizens since it symbolises a grossly inefficient way to allocate scarce human resources and imposes an economic cost on South African society as a whole.

Differential labour mobility not only robs the economy of a valuable resource and diminish the competitiveness of South African businesses at home and abroad, it also saps the self-esteem of the affected groups leading to conditions of poverty that undermine social cohesion. In order to function properly on a theoretical level, labour economists’ models make certain assumptions about labour suppliers and labour markets that do not always hold true on a practical level.

For example: it is presumed that all workers are primarily motivated by a desire for economic gain and would in an ideal world move beyond provincial boundaries in order to maximise their benefits. But while higher wages in other parts of the country may be attractive to labour migrants from Western Cape, social and cultural factors, as well as the legacy of the coloured labour preference policy may often temper workers’ willingness to leave the Western Cape. Conversely, the coloured labour preference policy, which has been scrapped in law, continues unabated as it is still being vigorously sought by others. It is not racist to interrogate these issues and to debate them freely and frankly. They are national issues and not simply “coloured” matters.

It is significant to note that the Constitutional Court has commented on the effect of the coloured labour preference policy on the transformational process in three major decisions. It did so in the Grootboom case where Justice Yacoob stated:

“The cause of the acute housing shortage lies in apartheid. A central feature of that policy was a system of influx control that sought to limit African occupation of urban areas. Influx control was rigorously enforced in the Western Cape, where government policy favoured the exclusion of African people in order to accord preference to the coloured community: a policy adopted in 1954 and referred to as the ‘coloured’ labour preference policy.…The legacy of influx control in the Western Cape is the acute housing shortage that exists there now.”

That court also discussed the background to this policy fully in the majority judgment of that court in Ex Parte Western Cape Provincial Government and Others: In Re DVB Behuising (Pty) Ltd v North West Provincial Government and Another 2000 (4) BCLR 347 (CC) paras 41-47. It recently did so in the Thubelisha Homes cases.

You would not dare accuse these judges of anti-coloured racism but you have no compunction about scoring cheap political points at Manyi’s expense.

You make totally unsubstantiated statements that in the light of the utterances Manyi made when he was “the DG of the Department of Labour, and given the fact that the amendments to the Employment Equity Act were drafted during your tenure, I have a sense that your racism has infiltrated the highest echelons of government”.

This is political grandstanding and arrogant disrespect to your cabinet colleague whose portfolio includes Labour.

Truth be told, you and a motley crew of coloured politicians have arrogated to yourselves the exclusive monopoly to speak or comment on issues pertaining to coloured people.

You have abused this supposed right to impose a form of apartheid and institutionalised hypocrisy in our national discourse.

What Colour Is The Wind?

Some claim it depends on the ambient temperature. The colder the more blue, the warmer--the more it tends to be red. I will not make an assumption yet here, I am looking for answers.

Wind is the movement of air molecules. Can air molecules have colour? If they have color can they have more than one color? Air molecules are colourless. However, air often has other molecules mixed in it (e.g. smoke). These other molecules often have 'colour'. Thus, they impart a colour to the mixture of air and smoke. If this mixture is 'blowing in the wind', then the air may be perceived to have colour.

So it is hard to define the colour of the wind. Perhaps, it is where the wind takes you, the different experiences we come across. Hard and heavy blowing winds share a different experience to calm and quite winds.

In closing, the wind is the colour you choose it to be.

If I Were The Boss?

I would ensure that I know my employees interest. In knowing that, the interest of my organisation as well as that of the employees will be treated as mutually exclusive within. Once that is achieved, I would identify each individuals strength and place them accordingly. For each employee, clearly define his role in the organisation as an individual as well as in a team, and how work should be carried out.

Once this working relationship has been built and is clearly understood by everyone, introduce fast, easy communication channels. Ways that allow easy interaction, with both internal & external stakeholders. It is also important that I instil a discipline of responsibility as well as encourage self-reliance.

There is a lot in being a boss that is mentioned here, these are chief-leading imperatives that needs a bosses serious attention.

Improving the quality of education (Budget Speech)

We need to distinguish truly and with frank whether the billions of rands thrown into education yearly as a tool for improvement of education will really bring the results. I’m not overlooking the efforts deployed by Government, for that matter I commend Government on their moves. However, reality must not be overlooked.

Government needs to introduce ways to encourage young people to have interest in education. I don’t think or feel that all this money will create such interest. This requires an interesting curriculum that is responsive to the nature of things around the country and our societies. It should be direct and organised based on young people’s line of interest as well as that of the country. That is if we take seriously the notion of a better South Africa and a developed people of the country.

The curriculum required should also consider the interest of teachers, to ensure that they themselves play a role in encouraging scholars. Our education system requires to be redefined to better respond to the skills shortages, poverty, mental suppression faced by the masses of people in our society. This radical approach needs to be explored in order to maximise the interest of many poor South Africans, who will participate positively in change as well as economically aspire through less criminal activities.

Fancy buildings are merely a waste where there is no curriculum content that interests stakeholder in any institution, not just education. This is just but my view of how things should be, an Africanised curriculum content, that will capacitate Africans in becoming owners of their own means, not merely borrowers as well as supplicants to the west. In order for our country to gain Nation Dignity in the Global state, it requires a radical change.

I will remain in hope that our Government has bold ideas for the future of our country. Money will not buy, not this time.

It is priced at R749.00 including VAT. I visited a Vodashop and the offer includes a 2GIG SD Card, a Prepaid SIM card and 100MB of data. I was told that it’s also going to launch on contract soon. I say thumbs up to Vodacom for this, I must get one myself, and this piece of device is so convenient and it will definitely change lives.

TWO PEOPLE COME OUT OF A BUILDING AND INTO A STORY...

.....and so the story begins. He realises that he has just bumped into his soul mate, and at first glance he is caught up in love at first sight. She, waiting outside for the cab, he approaches her, tells her his name just when the cab pulls over. She gets inside the cab, he holds the door, asks for her name gently.

Like in a movie, she flirts in her look and shuts the door behind her, living him standing on the side of the pavement. His driver pulls over, ‘quick chase that cab’, he instructs his driver, and with no hesitation the driver pulls. As she approaches home in a cab, at a red robot, a guy selling roses, he buys a bunch for his first sight soul mate.

The cab pulls over; he waits in the car to see who will open the door for her. She rings a bell and waits, the door opens, she steps inn...bang!!!! The door closes. With confidence, he steps out of the car, walks slowly towards the door....He knocks. Little did he know what was waiting for him......TO BE CONTINUED!

The glits and the glamour face of Public Relations (PR) has clothed the perception of PR. It has become fashionable as well as a trend industry, with its dynamic approach in business. The designers and architects of this fashion PR are bolt from the blue with what it has become and what it still promises to become. The tone remains fairly even with slight simplicity as well as a bit of a "swagg", depending on the business of the day.

PR continues to set the trends in business communication. Communication develops a fundamental design of operation in organisations that is used across business. This design of PR communication sets a tone that reaches out to the desired audience for a desired response. For example, relationship PR differs in every way to relationship marketing & advertising due to the foundation it lays in its scope. Its fashionable trend-set appearance produces lasting brands through trust, honesty and integrity.

President Of The Republic Hails Social Media Contribution!!

On the State of the Nation Address, President Jacob Zuma acknowledged the role played by the social networking sites. He, with compliments presented his applause to facebook and twitter. It is about time our Government came down to the people, with only the hope that action will take place. This teaches us a few lessons on how to address social related matters. Would I be wide of the mark to assert that politics is business?

The approach used by the National Presidency is a business move and I do applaud them for that strategic move. Politics in SA have always been distanced by politician from social network platforms and here Mr. JZ is setting a trend. This is the new dawn in politics of the day in Mzantsi.

Government has no excuse in ensuring service delivery, as this creates direct engagement with the public. Government must be critical as well as pay enough attention to the social engagements shared in these sites. As citizens we are the critics and watchdogs of this Government, and I only hope and pray that based on this new approach, we will not be disappointed.

WHAT SONGS TO SING OR NOT TO SING?

I really don’t know what’s becoming of this country. Since when do we have people who will tell the public and their leaders which songs to sing in public? How much do we have to give up of our own, just to be accepted? South Africans have given up so much in order to be part of the world and it worries me.

A lot has been taken away from South Africans, what belongs to as well as who we are. We good theorists of what an African child is, but we fail to compliment that with action and actually define it in action. Songs about ‘kill the boer’ were sung even after 1994, this is not new. We ignore the exploitation that leads to farmers being killed, and quickly blame it on songs. Men have lost their dignity at their homes, because they simply unable to put bread on the table and leads them in things such as murder and crime. Pardon me; I am not complimenting murder and crime in any way.

Farm labourers are experiencing a lot of exploitation and all we are led to concentrate on is a false impact a song has on the repercussions. South Africans must learn to put politics aside and observe situations from a human perspective.

This required no court cases about the song from the beginning; it required a radical address on the exploitation that is taking place on farm labourers. Beyond anything else it required human moral. This was a deliberate mechanism for us to lose focus from the truth. When a man’s dignity and being is stolen, that requires human, real human. Finish and Klaar.
